A Few Words
A Few Words I realize that some of you have been counting down to this day since what seems like forever. I know what that feels like. When regular action decisions came out last year, I was at a debate tournament, with no access to a computer. A friend of mine had promised to let me use her Blackberry to check my decision, but just as the pivotal moment arrived, I couldnt find her; shed disappeared to go eat lunch at a nearby McDonalds. I dont think Ive ever disliked fast food more. After fidgeting for a good ten minutes, I decided to call home and get my mom to check for me. It took me a great deal of nerve to do that, to know that if I were to be rejected, my mom would see it first. But still, I called. And told her how to log in. And listened to her read the letter. And proceeded to hyperventilate in disbelief and happiness. Ive wondered before what my life would be like if I hadnt gotten into MIT and hadnt chosen to come here. I believe it would have worked out fine: I would have still gone to college, made new friends, learned to work hard, had a blast. Your decisions will come out in less than six hours, and its possible that no amount of distraction will ease your anxiety. I hope you guys have all read Chriss entry. Really, dont panic! To those of you who get in: Welcome to MIT! Celebrate with your family and friends and join the Facebook group! Make sure you thank the ones who helped you make it this far :) I cant wait to meet some of you at CPW! To those of you who dont get in: Take a deep breath. Its okay. In my psychology class, we talked about an experiment where people attempted to predict their level of happiness before and after receiving a raise. Several stated that theyd be much happier after receiving such a pay increase; months later, however, both those who hadnt received a raise and those who had reported the same level of satisfaction with their lives. Im sorry for giving you guys a psych lesson :( I just want you to know that its going to be fine. Youre all talented and creative; you might not be using MIT as your stepping stone, but youre still going to change the world. And to those of you who get waitlisted: Waitings hard, yes. But the sentiment of this entry still applies. Dont give up hope! People really do get off the waitlist, and you could be one of them :) To everyone: As my Star Wars-loving friends frequently say: May the Force be with you.

Positive Effects from Mother Figures on Marguerite Johnson...
In the book I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou, there are several women who play very important roles in Marguerite Johnsonââ¬â¢s life and development. Marguerite had three women in her life that educated and provided her with useful skills, information, security, religion and love. Momma, Mrs. Flowers, and Maââ¬â¢ Dear are mother figures in Margueriteââ¬â¢s life who provide her with the necessities and strength to help her through life, Momma taught Marguerite about religion and cleanliness and was a good role model when it came to being strong and powerful, Mrs. Flowers introduced and provided Marguerite with literature and Maââ¬â¢ Dear who is Marguerite biological mother wasnââ¬â¢t with her as she was growing but she still played a veryâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Marguerite would pray whenever she felt lonely or felt that she needed to feel secure and taken care of. Momma also taught Marguerite about the importance of cleanliness, she was very str ict when it came to being clean. Marguerite remembers when momma would say, ââ¬Å"Thou shall not be dirtyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Though shall not be impudentâ⬠, Marguerite saw these rules as Mommaââ¬â¢s two commandments, which had to be followed in order to live a happy life in Mommaââ¬â¢s house. Marguerite saw these commandments as rules that she must not break because if she did she would feel the wrath of Momma Henderson, which was mainly physical. Marguerite says ââ¬Å"Momma was famous for pulling the quilts off . . . examine our feet. If they werenââ¬â¢t clean enough . . . she took the switch . . .aptly placed burning remindersâ⬠Momma didnââ¬â¢t play around when it came to having a clean face and body, which probably encouraged or injected fear in Marguerite that kept Marguerite from going to bed dirty. Marguerite also recalls Momma seeing dirtiness as a sign of disrespect and in a way against God because ââ¬Å"cleanliness [is] next to Godlinessâ⬠an d if you werenââ¬â¢t clean you werenââ¬â¢t holly (27-28). Momma also showed Marguerite how to be independent and strong. Momma is a very strong and independent woman, she ran a store all by herself, she was financially stable, and had more money than the ââ¬Å"powhitetrashâ⬠(28). Marguerite saw the strength and power that Momma

Spanking Child Into A Problematic Life - 1295 Words
Spanking your Child into a Problematic Life? In 2014 UNICEF reported that 80% of parents in the world support spanking (Holeman and Wire). Another study conducted in 2012 exposed that 70% of parents that live in America, also, support the use of spanking (Perry). Despite the majority in favor of spanking, there are numerous debates about whether spanking is an effective way to discipline your child or not. In result of the debates, many researchers have conducted studies based solely on the outcomes of spanking. A great number of the studies have concluded that there is a positive correlation between spanking and aggression, mental illness, and antisocial behaviors in the future. Despite the current view on spanking, researches haveâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It had to control non-spanking related factors that might affect the childrenââ¬â¢s outcomes. And, lastly, it had to have findings with statistical strength. (Perry). Making sure each criteria eliminates the past doubt many had with other meta-analysis studies on sp anking. After leading the study, Gershoff and Grogan-Kaylor verified that spanking has many negative effects. Such as children who have been spanked in their childhood were more likely to support physical punishment. (Holeman and Wire). Also, this study displayed a positive correlation, meaning if there is an increase in the amount of spanking then there will be an increase in the childââ¬â¢s likelihood of anti-social behavior, mental health issues, and aggression (Holeman and Wire). The study even indicates, spanking will only discipline the childââ¬â¢s behavior for a small amount of time. Gershoff observed that, when there is a ââ¬Å"long-termâ⬠behavior acquired by the child, the behavior disappears once the physical threat has left, then the child will go back to their old behaviors (Narvaez). Another conclusion from the study was if the parent spanked their kids then the parents have a higher chance of physically abusing their children. This recent study is very be neficial to help parents understand the consequences of spanking. ââ¬Å"We as society think of spanking and physical abuse as distinct behavior. Yet our research shows that spanking is linked with the

Rhetoric Is Used in the Play Julius Caesar Free Essays
Ms. Waldo English 2 May 19, 2011 Rhetoric is used in the play Julius Caesar in many occasions. What is rhetoric? Rhetoric is being able to persuade someone for your own good. We will write a custom essay sample on Rhetoric Is Used in the Play Julius Caesar or any similar topic only for you Order Now This is used when Cassius persuades Brutus to join the conspiracy, Brutusââ¬â¢s speech to the plebeians, and Antonyââ¬â¢s speech to the plebeians. All these characters were masters of ethos, pathos, and logos, which are different ways of persuasion. Each person uses different ones in the play. The conspirators would no have stood a chance of killing Caesar without Brutus on there side. All thanks to Cassius Brutus joined. It wasnââ¬â¢t all that easy for Cassius to make Brutus join. In the first place Brutus did not like the idea of killing Caesar. Cassius had a hard job to do. One way Cassius approached this was by raising Brutus up, A quote from the play was ââ¬Å" I know that virtue to be in you, Brutus, as I do know your outward favorâ⬠(Shakespeare 892) this was building up Brutusââ¬â¢s confidence. This applies to ethos; Cassius is playing with Brutusââ¬â¢s emotion. The last way Cassius persuaded Brutus was writing letters to him. These letters were supposable written from other people saying that Brutus should join the conspiracy. Actually all the letters were written from Cassius. This also applies to ethos because Brutus ends up freaking out about the whole thing and ends up joining the conspiracy. Brutusââ¬â¢s speech to the plebeians is probably one of the most important parts of the play. Brutus and the conspirators had just killed Caesar. So everyone is freaking out and going crazy. The plebeians now think the conspirators are evil and mad. Brutus has to change their minds. A quote from the play that Brutus said was ââ¬Å"Not that I love Caesar less, but I love Rome more. Had you rather Caesar were living, and die all slaves than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men? â⬠(Shakespeare 948). Brutus was saying he killed Caesar for the good of Rome and he loves Rome more than he loves Caesar. This starts changing the mind of the Plebeians. Another thing Brutus did was told how Caesar was too ambitious for Rome and he deserved to die. This was the frosting on the cake for Brutus. Brutus ended up changing the minds of the Plebeians that killing Caesar was the right thing to do. Ever since Caesar died, Mark Anthony looked for revenge. Since Brutus got the plebeians on his side; it made it difficult for Anthony to seek revenge by himself. It would take loads of persuasion to convince the plebeians yet again that Brutus and the conspirators were wrong to kill Caesar. To begin, Antony starts to bring down Brutus. He says, ââ¬Å"Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When the poor man cried, Caesar hath wept; ambition should be made of sterner stuff. â⬠(Shakespeare 950) This let the Plebeians thing for a little. Then Antony uses logos to show how Caesar was not ambitious. To top things off, Antony reads Caesars will, which is more like a bribe because Antony teases the crowd talking about the will and finely reads it when the crowd is most desperate. This speech from Antony changed the Plebeians mind yet again. The play Julius Caesar is full of persuasion. From Brutusââ¬â¢s speech to the plebeians to Cassius persuading Brutus to join the conspiracy, each having a different rule. Rhetoric can be seen in many different forms. You just have to see if it can change your mind. Sources: Shakespeare, William, Julius Caesar, Elements of literature 4th course How to cite Rhetoric Is Used in the Play Julius Caesar, Essay examples

Watershed river basin management
A watershed is one of the units discovered to play a role in conservation of the environment (Carlsen 44). It is through watersheds that water is regulated ensuring sufficient water for the present need and the future to come. The watershed has a joint role of preserving the environment and also maximizes its use by encouraging the flow of resources (Blake 2).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Watershed river basin management specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Watershed management programs have been encouraged across states to support the environment and improve the standards of living for the people around (Carlsen 44). Developing a watershed is an effective strategy in water management and animal conservation. A watershed sustains water management cycle, for instance the Columbia River basin around the Pacific Northwest. The Colombia river basin management program covers Idaho, Washington and Oregon. The river basi n through the Washington department is able to regulate the quality of water and the distribution of water to the surroundings. The watershed is highly favored because it is able to optimally distribute the flow of the natural resources (Ffolliot 76). It is able to satisfy the great demand for water and still ensure plenty supply in the future. The Columbia River basin covers approximately 10,000 acres of land and through it water is regionally supplied to the towns and firms around it. The river basin is an efficient unit to sustain the towns with water because it routes quality water to the people sustaining nature and its resources. The Columbia River basin also enables water planning because it unifies the need to meet the demands of water and still conserves the natural habitat of fish and plants around it (Ffolliot 77). The Columbia water basin distributes water to the various states and still conserves the natural habitat of animals and plants that live in water. It is lastly a good unit because it allows decentralization of responsibility in water management (Carlsen 45). The Columbia River basin has a lot of stakeholders like the Washington department of fish and wildlife, the public utility district and the department of ecology. There are several benefits and challenges that come up once the watershed is created. A watershed is able to protect the environment because it is able to strike an aquatic ecosystem balance (Ffolliot 78). The Columbia River basin for instance is able to supply sufficient water to the people and also preserve enough water for the other surroundings.Advertising Looking for essay on environmental studies? The unit is able to increase the water supply and enhance it through the water cycle management. This assists in water regulation for production of elec tricity, everyday usage and for the natural environment (Ffolliot 79). Regulation also sees to it that the wildlife is not threatened. The unit is able to supply quality water, which improves the standards of living and healthy living. It ensures that there are enough water supplies for the present demand and the future. This prevents water shortage during long spells of drought and flooding during heavy rain. The water management system is efficient due to data collected and predictions done beforehand to prevent natural disasters (Ffolliot 79). However, watersheds still encounter certain challenges such as funding. The cost of water management is huge and requires many donors to contribute for the various watershed overheads. Pollutant reduction to zero can prove to be a challenge during the implementation process. Water management alternatives such as state or national boundaries are exercised; however the watershed is far able to conserve the farms, towns and the wildlifeââ¬â ¢s habitat (Blake 5). It can regulate the water ensuring quality and enough supply of it to meet the great demand. The state of national boundaries may not be as effective as the watershed program, due to accumulated state interests. Using national boundaries is bound to bring in conflicts among states based on resource management. Watershed system is able to combine the several stakeholders instead towards one mission. The Columbia River basin for instance has several stakeholders such as the department of wildlife and the department of health in Washington working together. A watershed would stand best than an eco-region as a result of resources employed. The chances of an eco-region being more successful could be low due to the large budget involved to maintain the program. The Columbia River basin along the Pacific Northwest is an effort of more than three states, which makes the funding less burdening. The watershed is an effective water manager due to its ability to preserve t he environment and still utilize its resources. In summary, society ever growing needs for water requires watershed management to meet this need and also prevent natural resource drain. It is a challenge to meet this needs everyday and not causes an imbalance of nature.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Watershed river basin management specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Efforts however are been placed to come up with new technological ideas to ensure water is well regulated for future supply. The increase of usable water can be managed by employing various water management policies ensuring constant water supply. The watershed policy emphasis is on quality water supply and preservation of the environment despite the demand. Works Cited Blake, White. Development of a watershed for the lower river basin. The Effect Of Different Substances On The Freezing Essays
The Effect Of Different Substances On The Freezing Essays The Effect Of Different Substances On The Freezing Point Of Water Essays, Book Reports, Term Papers This essay The Effect Of Different Substances On The Freezing Point Of Water Essays, Book Reports, Term Papers has a total of 2601 words and 12 pages. The Effect of Different Substances on the Freezing Point of Water Period 4 January 19, 2012 The Effect of Different Substances on the Freezing Point of Water Introduction Water is essential for all life on Earth and covers 70% of the Earth surface. Water is a chemical substance composed of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. Its chemical formula is H2O. Pure water is transparent, colorless and odorless. Water is mostly seen as liquid. However water can be found in all three states of liquid, solid, and gas depending on the temperature. At room temperature, water is a liquid. But it becomes solid (ice) when the temperature drops to 0oC or it turns into gas when the temperature rises to 100oC. The reason water changes its state is molecules have energy. Water molecules in a liquid form have more energy than in a solid form. They move around quickly. When the liquid cools down, water molecules slow down their movement and the energy is reduced. When the water temperature reaches around 0oC, the molecules almost do not move and stick together to form a solid - ice (Manahan, 2010). When water and ice are in contact with each other, two things hap pen that (1) ice molecules escape into the water (melting) and (2) water molecules are captured on the ice surface (freezing). When the rate of freezing is the same as the rate of melting, the amount of water and the amount of ice do not change. The ice and water are said to be in dynamic equilibrium. The balance point between freezing and melting of the two states of water is at 0oC (Wolf, 2010). But this balance between freezing and melting can easily be disrupt when either water or ice changes conditions. Baking soda, better known to chemists as bicarbonate of soda, sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, or sodium acid carbonate, is a chemical compound with a chemical formula of NaHCO3. Baking soda is a white solid and often appears as a fine powder with crystalline grains. Baking soda can form naturally. However, most baking soda sold in stores are man-made by combining carbon dioxide (an odorless gas) and soda ash (extract from sources like a mineral called trona and ashes of certain plants). As baking soda is formed by combining an acid (carbonic) and sodium hydroxide, it reacts with other chemicals as a mild alkali. Therefore, when it is mixed with acid, baking soda neutralizes the acid, breaks down proteins, and gives off carbon dioxide gas (commonly seen as bubbles) (Zukowski, 2009). Because of its chemical and physical properties, baking soda is used for a wide range of applications such as baking, cleaning, deodorizing, buffering, and fire extinguishing. Salt is a mine ral composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl), a chemical compound belonging to the larger class of ionic salts. Salt is in a crystalline form but varies in color from colorless when it is pure to white, gray or brownish due to other natural mineral elements within the crystal. Salt is formed naturally and can be found everywhere in the world like underground and sea. There are many different types of salts. Salt is not only essential for human and animal lives but also often used to assist in various manufacturing and productions like textile dyeing, soap making and pottery production (Roman et al, 2011). When a substance like baking soda or salt is put into water, it is dissolved in the water. This is because the polarity of water molecules can attract the polar ionic compounds and separate the molecules of other substances. In this process, scientists term the substance to be dissolved as a solute and refer the water as the solvent the one that does the dissolving. The formed mixture is called a solution (Amora and Chu, 2010). Research has found that the freezing point of a solution is lower than 0oC, the freezing point of the pure water.

Article Review on Online Identity
Article Review on Online Identity Article Review on Online Identity In You Wanna Take This Online, Chu has addressed the prevalent issue of cyber bullying. Chu commences the article by introducing the reader to a case study about a certain girl, Taylor and what she loves most as illustrated on her blog page. Chu progresses to illustrate how Taylor was informed by Sidney, her friend, about a list of Hos in which she has been listed. Chu has used a case study approach to introduce the reader to the topic at hand, creating a form of suspense to the reader who anticipates what the author is attempting to imply while reading through the article. Chu has selected the use of technology to pick on other people as the thesis for his article Chu implies that cyber bullying is inversely relative to physical bullying in terms of gender illustrating the fact that girls bully other girls online whereas in the physical bullying boys are the victims. To reinforce on this point, Chu has provided survey results illustrating that 17% of the girls have been cyber bullied whereas less than 10% of the boys have been cyber bullied. Throughout the article, Chu has cited a survey by Clemson University who have investigated the topic thoroughly. Chu has developed his ideas and presented them in a chronological order. From the case, Chu has then introduced the aspect of cyber bullying and then he has progressed to introduce the manner in which this trend has developed and increased with the internet becoming increasingly popular. The presentation of ideas throughout the article has progressed from simple explanations to complicated aspects of cyber bullying. Chu has used a number of specialists who have contributed to the findings of his article. These specialists include Kowalski, Aftab and Taylor, who has had experience with cyber bullies. Chu extends the discussion to providing an explanation for the reasons as to why cyber bullies bully other people. The article has illustrated that the emotional or psychological problems (Chu 52). Using Aftabââ¬â¢s explanation, Chu has then illustrated the fact that some of the cyber bullies evidently suffer from a hormonal imbalance. To completely relate the writing of his article with the target audience, Chu has used language that is commonly used by young teenagers. The use of phrases such as Wanna and OMG is a depiction of the audience that Chu targets while writing this article. The use of slang is evident throughout the article. The use of slang words as well as the informal nature of the language used has been highly effective in ensuring that the author establishes a connection with the teenage readers. The diction is also highly informal. For instance, Chu has used the words Hos to mean whores and ââ¬ËSoooââ¬â¢ to exaggerate the term ââ¬Ësoââ¬â¢. This form of writing is highly effective in capturing the attention of the young readers. Chu has adequately researched the topic and thus is merely informing the reader about this trend. This has been illustrated by the multiple references included in this article. The information provided throughout the article is informative and hardly inquisitive. This is the main purpose of the article. Chu is attempting to reach the parents and teachers about the trend of cyber bullying as well as informing the teenagers that being picked on through the internet by their colleagues is in fact being bullied. Chuââ¬â¢s diction is grammatically incorrect. The use of multiple quotation marks to illustrate continuity in speech is one such error. Chu has also used certain in applicable punctuation marks such as ââ¬Ëâ⢠¥Ã¢â¬â¢ to replace the word love. These punctuation skills that have been used are formally unusual but commonly applied in the informal setting particularly by the target readers, teenage girls. Another unusual component of Chuââ¬â¢s articleââ¬â¢s punctuation is the uncalled for capitalization to illustrate emphasis. The humor that has been illustrated by the author has been illustrated through the use selected character quotations which are some of the ways through which the author has managed to keep the audience interested in the article yet manage to grasp the main information presented in the article. Chu has concluded the article through the use of Taylorââ¬â¢s mother course of action to watch her child over such cases of cyber bullying, illustrating that the parents need to be actively involved in the lives of these children. However, this article is spectacular based on its purpose and it engagement with the target readers. The audience has been greatly considered by Chu throughout the paper. Additionally, the content that has been presented in this article is highly credible and professionally researched. It is this core aspect of this article that has made it spectacular and relevant. Chu has also addressed the purposes of this paper well, outlining the role of the parents, teachers and the teenage students in attempting to curb and prevent the occurrence and increase in the cases of cyber bullying. Additionally, the articleââ¬â¢s informality has been of great importance in that the author manages to interact with the thoughts of the readers. ______________ is a professional essay writing service which can provide high school, college and university students with 100% original custom written essays, research papers, term papers, dissertations, courseworks, homeworks, book reviews, book reports, lab reports, projects, presentations and other assignments of top quality.
